I was appalled how the dog owner reacted in the interview on The New Paper‘s main article today.
She was reported to cry over the phone and said “I’m not sure what happened. I don’t think my dog would attack anyone. It just wanted to play.”
Sure. It just wanted to play. But, it’s not a toy that the Siberian Husky was playing with. It’s a 3-year-old girl, for goodness sake!
If not for her father, I can’t imagine what would happen to her.
An extract of the main story – Mr Jamie Sail, father of a 3-year-old girl who was attacked by an unleashed Siberian Husky at Tanjung Beach at Sentosa, was furious that the dog was allowed to roam unleashed. He had demanded the dog owner’s contact details and made her agree to send the dog to the vet immediately to check for diseases. The husky’s owner said she lives in a flat in Marsiling and she was unsure if her one-year-old dog was licensed as she had adopted it from a friend for only a month. She now wants to re-home it. She was upset that Mr Sail had beaten her dog with a stick in his anger. She expressed concern for the girl and said she had sent her dog to the vet to ensure that it is free of diseases. A Sentosa spokesman said that its beaches are meant to be enjoyed by all visitors, including those with pets, but it reminded all beach users to be civic-minded. AVA said it is investigating the incident. It holds owners responsible for their pets’ behaviour in public places. Mr Madhavan Kannan, head of AVA’s centre of Animal Welfare and Control, said the Siberian Husky is not among the breeds allowed to be kept in a HDB flat. Meanwhile, the Singapore Kennel Club said that the Siberian Husky is a gentle and friendly dog but the important thing in dog ownership is that when dogs are taken out of their compound, they must be leashed at all times (unless at designated dog runs).
Also, recently there’s a ST story about dogs being dumped. One was shown dumped at Tampines Expressway and rescued by SOS Animals.
Be a responsible dog owner, for goodness sake!
